Abstract

While the internet is widely used nowadays, “participation” has become one of the most important keywords for understanding modern society. In recent years, citizen science, a collaborative research project between experts and citizens (non-experts), has been emerging as a way for citizens to participate in scientific research. Also, crowdfunding, which is the process of raising research funds from citizens via the internet, is getting a lot of attention. In this talk, citizen science and crowdfunding for scientific research will be introduced with an overview and examples, and the differences between Europe and the United States and Japan, especially the current situation and issues in Japan will be discussed.
