On January 20-21, 2022, Project Researcher Atsuko Sano from B’AI Global Forum participated in and presented at a workshop “The History of Medialization and Empowerment: The Intersection of Women’s Rights Activism and the Media” organized by the German Historical Institute London.

This event was the culmination of a three-year project examining the networks, interconnections and dependencies of women’s rights and the media throughout the long-twentieth century focusing on the history of feminism(s) as a lens into changing practices and ideas of women’s emancipation.

Dr. Sano examined the legal changes in abortion in Germany from the perspective of the media and the women’s movement, taking into account the relationship between the first and fourth waves of feminism. She also considered how the ICT media could change the framework of reproductive health and rights, including abortion, in the fourth wave, which is said to be underway, citing examples from Japan and Germany.

This presentation was based on the paper in the latest journal of the Graduate School of Social Design studies, Rikkyo University, to be published in March 2022.
