On March 22, 2023, the 18th meeting of the B’AI Book Club, a book review session by project members of the B’AI Global Forum, was held online. At this meeting, a review of our first book titled “Understanding AI in Society: How Technology Exerts Power” was conducted led by Associate Prof. Ai Hisano, who is one of the editors of this book.

First, Hisano explained the purpose and outline of the book and provided a brief introduction to some of its chapters. As all participants were involved in writing the book, everyone shared their comments on their own contributions and impressions of other chapters. During the discussion, opinions were exchanged about the future direction of our project, which was triggered by the publication of the book.

The consensus among the members was that the book should serve as a catalyst for dialogue with a wider range of fields, which aligns with B’AI’s goals so far. The papers on AI and power in the book are written by a variety of academics from different fields, making it multidisciplinary in nature. While it is not strictly interdisciplinary, project members shared the view that interdisciplinarity may not be necessary depending on the future direction of the project.
